Just wanted to say great job on this game! Story is engaging and evenly-paced throughout, love the fact that you play as a fully realized Dark Lord and your companions are family members (at least as far as I am in the game), battle system is solid, the retro HD graphics are really nice to look at and the soundtrack is simply amazing! Already looking forward to the sequel!

Yup! When I give a rating, I make sure that I've experienced the game fully (took me a while to take out that final boss) so that I can write a fair and balanced opinion piece. This is actually the only RPGMaker RPG I've finished (To the Moon, Ninja Clause, and Touhou aren't counted because they're not RPGs). The full review can be found here: Skysenshi.com

I just read through your review, it's a shame you didn't kill the old man. Unless I am mistaken killing him is needed to unlock an extra battle later on. I was also curious if you defeated the "Invincible" boss (Tanya Botelho), or stuck mostly to the main story. I'm only familiar with the non-Nightmare Vision version of the game and it seems they changed quite a few things with that DLC.

Oh, there was an extra battle that I unlocked which had all the ghosts of the people I killed except I was too weak at that time and skipped it. Unfortunately, I could no longer activate that battle. I guess it was a one-time thing. Wasn't able to encounter the "Invincible" boss though. I think what I had was the Nightmare Vision version because it says so on the title screen.

Ah, I thought I remembered that the old guy was one of the NPCs that needed to die to trigger that, it's been a little while since I played this game so I might have misremembered. I ended up skipping that part too, and you can only trigger the event the first time you pass that spot. Including the "Invincible" boss there are two optional bosses on the floor where you encountered the Alpha and Beta Guardians, you can find the instructions to reach them at the end of the guide here: Gamefaqs.com To get to Tanya Botelho you need an item called "the key to nothing?", which can only be found in the corner of an area where a side quest takes place. If your free time is limited you might want to skip that battle anyway, as it's basically impossible to win unless your party members are each at least level 85~ and have at least 8000 health. My party members were all about level 90 with at least 9000 health each on my attempt, in addition to this you would want a lot of healing items. Another question occurs to me, did you unlock the secret character after you beat Anto?

I unlocked the secret character but can't beat the final bosses of the bonus dungeon. I'm at the right level I think, but it's just one of those really tough boss battles where you've gotta get a few lucky turns. Also, the main final boss of the game was the bane of my existence until after 7 tries I beat him lol.

Hmm, by bonus dungeon are you referring to the Zataron? If not it's probably something I haven't encountered, but if it is the Zataron I can at least provide you with my experiences and see if they help. Personally, by the time I was done with the Zataron Magus was level 82, Xiria was level 75, Isis was level 60, and "secret character" was level 69. The strategy I used was pretty simple: on the first turn I had Isis use Agility Bless on herself (though I might have used a Quicken Scroll here), Magus and Xiria did everything they could to inflict damage, and "secret character" used Dragon Form. Hopefully Dragon Form will inflict a status ailment on The Lady of Despair and on turns where Isis doesn't need to heal she would use Agility Bless on herself or one of the others as needed. You could also try the strategy outlined in the walkthrough I posted above, it's similar but I used fewer of the one-off items than they seem to endorse and I remember using Agility Bless quite a bit. I was pretty over-leveled by the time I tried the final story boss (I try to stay a few levels ahead of the "recommended level" when possible) and after trying to face Miss Botelho pretty much anything seems easy by comparison.

That's a great review! You hit on alot of points, and I agree with pretty much everything you said. This game deserves to be in the mainstream, and I'm just about to start playing the demo for Episode 2 (I just beat Episode 1 that final boss was challenging for a welcome change).

Yup! I gave it a final grade of 8. I have a feeling the sequel will be better but I am afraid of touching a game beyond 20 hours due to lack of time. I am so glad a friend led me to Desura. I see promising games here that aren't in Steam. Steam now is full of games I'm not even interested in.
