The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by the staff at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.
To celebrate the announcement of the SFM, They've also released "Meet the Pyro", the ninth installment in the "Meet the Team" series. Like all of Their animated shorts, They made it using the SFM.
If you're interested in making movies and games in parallel, sign up for an SFM beta key and start shooting your movie on location inside the world of TF2 today.

EXCELLENT!
*does the airguitar*
Source just never ceases to amaze me.. people keep complaining that the Source engine is old and a new one is need, this clearly shows just how wrong those people are. still a ton of things possible with this engine. even graphics wise. just look at some of the horror mods for source out there. those tend to show just amazing you make a map in source look. and i'm sure we all remember just how stunning 'Dear Esther' looks.
awesome project and i can't wait to see what all those really talented people out there come up with :)
i want it so badly i might just look for a leak online lol.
Or...You could sign up for the beta? Besides, they're releasing it for free at some point eventually(I think).
But yeah, Source is really great - Not only can it do just about any genre of game at this point, but it can also do movies! A really cool feature they mentioned is the one where you can have real gameplay in there, and custom animations at the same time - And changing the gameplay animations. Really cool stuff, I can't wait to play around with it.
When working in ValveTime, it can take some years.
There's been a really, REALLY buggy version of SFM online for years now. It's so horrible most people don't use it though. And now it's being officially released!
Why is it going to be beta? Hope I can get a key, aha.
Most likely to test it on a range of computers.
OMG YES. I ATTEMPTED TO DO MACHINIMAS IN GMOD SO MANY TIMES BUT MOST USEFUL ADDONS ARE OUTDATED, ETC.
Especially the amount of hard work in lip syncing
oh good I want this so bad, but I heard that when you render the vid with the older version of the filmaker (from the beta) there was something about it coming out really slow or something and that you had to put it into another video editor to fix it. I doubt that windows movie maker could fix it :\
Bye Gmod
This can only be good for the entire Source community -- the players and the modders...and I imagine the Machinima crowd will be more than just a little excited about this.
imagine all the crap, and all the gold, to be released.
Hopefully this will expand to the other Source games, such as Portal and L4D
They've confirmed that you will be able to import your own assets, so nothing will be stopping you from importing things from other Valve games.
I've been waiting like a year for this, I even tried getting in through the old beta and I couldn't get it to work. Now FINALLY, Meet the Pyro and Sauce Fun Maker (LOL) is out, life= Complete...
i DID sign up for the beta, but we all know for a fact that i, being a player of portal 2 rather than tf2, will NOT get a key.
I hope the beta phase doesn't last too long, because I don't believe I'll be receiving an invite anytime soon; much like the CS:GO beta which i signed up for three months ago.
That's a great news, there are many great machinimas out there already and i guess by releasing source filmmaker, valve will give the scene a great boost.
Thinking of a Global Offensive machinima with a good story... aww damn!
so what happens if you do get into the beta? does it email you or automatically show up in your library for you to download? I dont want to miss it
When you get in the beta there is no key. You log in and a window pops up just as the news would that says you have Source Filmmaker beta access and you can now install it. It is 10Gb.
Did anyone else find the Robot Heads in the beta files :D?
