"Where Quake meets reality" is the motto the developers of Urban Terror have adopted. While many mods these days tend to focus on realistic game play, Urban Terror takes a "fun over realism" approach to the FPS arena by keeping the Q3 speed and physics.

Urban Terror was originally distributed as a mod when released in August 2000. When Urban Terror 4.0 was released, April 2007 the mod became a free, standalone game that uses the iourbanterror.exe based off ioquake3.

Ah, you know what, I stand corrected (and will update the release date), it was released August 5, 2000 while at Quakecon 2000. None of those whose dev houses were mentioned worked in the industry prior to Urban Terror.

Yup, one thing Urban Terror has never been heavy on are the art assets. That is not because we don't need them, we do and our artists have done some outstanding work over the years considering what they had to work with. Urban Terror is very strong on fast, realism based game play. Might not fancy everyone, but many continue to return to the game, so something must be right in the eyes of gamers.

I started with Urbanterror 4 years ago (beta 2.2) and I am still addicted. Fast movement, fast action and hell of fun - that's what a game should be all 'bout!

If you like eye candy and fancy graphics there is not much to expect, but if you love rock solid gameplay you really should give Urbanterror a shot.

Many First Person Shooters (FPS) get their own mods and TC's made for them. Half Life has Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, Unreal Tournament has Tactical Ops and Strike Force while Quake 3 has.....
Urban Terror, a game where on first glance you will think of it a just a Counter-Strike clone for Quake 3 but actually play the game and you will realise this game holds so much more than the very overrated CS.

One of the best things on Urban Terror is the whole climbing thing. Go up to a ledge and jump up towards it, if it's in reach your character will pull himself up it and onto the above platform.. this isn't just a one horse trick, this doesn't just happened on special coloured platforms, it's every ledge on every map. This opens up the play hugely gives the map some huge depth for hiding around on high up platforms and also opens up different ways to get to somewhere on the map.
Another thing that Urban Terror adds to online FPS is bandaging. When in a fire fight, say you get shot then you will start bleeding (Not with every time you get shot) you then have the opportunity to bandage yourself up to stop yourself from bleeding and losing more health. It may sound like something little but adds more tactics into the game, when your shot do you carrying on shooting at someone or hide round the corner quickly to bandage yourself up. Also if someone chooses to carry a medics rucksack then they can fully restore your health by walking up to you and pressing the bandage key, team mates who don't carry the medics rucksack can still heal you but not as much.
You don't buy weapons in Urban Terror, you simply choose your weapons when you enter the game and keep those weapons until you decide you want different weapons, I prefer this idea to the buy a gun every round, as it can annoy you if you have to do it every round cause you keep dieing.

There's also a stamina feature where if you keep jumping around it will disappear and you will walk slower and you can even hear yourself panting (Giving away your position to the enemy).
Urban Terror doesn't lack in game modes either! CTF (Capture the flag), free for all, team deathmatch, team survivor, follow the leader, bomb mode. Another thing that has been well thought out are the spawn points... there are several on each map meaning that you could be very close to each other or far apart which adds even more to the maps, and the maps! The maps are great!

Guys, this mod is awesome, exactly what I (played mainly W:ET and now ET:QW) want: Fast movement with precise weapons (without having to aim down the sights) and damage bonus when shooting in the head. Why aren“t there more games like this? What is it with casual gamers, that they prefer shooters with slow movement and inaccurate weapons (at least when not using the sights)?
