Hmm... well to be safe as opposed to sorry make sure you have HL2 installed and have at least gotten to the main menu once.

Afterwards, uninstall Eclipse and delete EVERYTHING from it's SourceMods folder. Then reinstall. If it doesn't work PM me.

I'm not really sure what the hullaballoo over Eclipse is -- perhaps the game picks up a great deal after earning some of the abilities, but I never made it far enough into the game to find out. Throwing objects at monsters who run faster than me and often take 5-6 hits to kill is too frustrating a experience to repeat several times, let alone against large hordes of them where the most dangerous object at hand is an oversized pumpkin squash. The game advises me to throw a firefly nest at the monsters to distract them and I do so, only to have the nest bounce off their heads to no avail. Frustrating. I'm going to give it a few more tries, but my first impression is very negative.

LOL, yeah the hullabulloo was over the fact that it was one of the first total conversions using hl2, we did it in only a few months, and it looked very pretty. In fact, people compared us to the at-the-time unreleased Oblivion, and one of the designers is now a lead at Bethesda.

I agree that the combat needed iteration and level design was thin- after all it was a project barely within scope! And to be honest, we did have some testers during production, but fairly late and major tweaking was impossible at that point. With most mods, you get a great team that sticks around, and gets MORE excited once the mod is in the wild. With Eclipse, we all left for jobs in the industry and like the ancient stone barrows Violet travels through, Eclipse is a dead monument to our hard work.

I discovered my issue! I had no idea (having misclicked "Close" instead of the appropriate arrow in the first book) that you could control the velocity of your projectiles, meaning I was throwing them at minimal speed. This makes the game MUCH easier and far more entertaining. However, I must question whether I could term it an RPG. Perhaps by the most technical definitions, but what defines an RPG for me is having a deeper emphasis on character development (statistical or plot-driven or otherwise). Eclipse still feels like a third-person shooter to me. If it had more abilities and more technical utilization of them, it might become a 3D Metroidvania, though.

Many of us would dearly love a sequel to this groundbreaking masterpiece. I often play through it again and again, taking it slow to take in all the sights and atmosphere it has to offer.

This is a 2005 mod by a student team, which has dissolved and is busy working in the games industry. So there won't be a successor by the same team. There is a similar project inspired by the success of Eclipse by a different student team at the same university. Developer.valvesoftware.com
