The Past Ain't What It Used To Be...

The first Command & Conquer received its last official update on the 21st of June, 1996. Since then, the game has been ported to Windows (as "Gold" version), and re-released in the big "The First Decade" collection pack, but has never received any more bug fixes.

The C&C Gold Patch 1.06 project aims at bringing this classic into the new millennium, by fixing the old bugs, supporting higher resolutions, and adding new modding and mapping possibilities. It also contains an addon-based language system, allowing anyone to create translation packs for the game.

A look under the hood: special mission behaviour

Someone asked me how some special mission behaviour in the game actually worked. Since more people may be interested in this, I decided to share my answers.

are the AI players in skirmish mode supposed to have no MCV ? they just have a collection of units with no way to build a base, even if you set bases to on..

I really, really thank you so much for making this.
Back then, I started my CnC experience with Red Alert, and never got the chance to play Tiberian Dawn, until now. I have to admit that, when watching the intro, tears came to my eyes: it was a legend of videogame history and now I would finally play it!

I have a problem, though. After some time playing the game, the mouse gets blocked in the options menu, and thus becomes unusable! As a result, I can't save/load/abort the mission (actual in-mission gameplay isn't affected) and the cutscenes after such event play only the sound, with animation getting stuck in the first frame of the movie. What I'm doing wrong? I would appreciate your help.

Hmm, blocked, as in, stuck in the middle? That normally only happens in windowed mode, if you alt-tab out of the program. Maybe alt-tabbing out and back in fixes it. If it doesn't, you can always disable cnc-ddraw in the config tool, that completely removes the system that does that. It'll also disable the stretching of videos to hi-res and such, though.

Blocked as uncapable of scrolling/clicking. The only thing I can do then is pressing Esc to go back to game. But since I can't abort mission, I'm forced to close CnC through Windows Task Manager.

I'm not using Windowed mode also, and I previously attempted alt-tabbing and didn't work. I really tried several ways before actually asking here.

Anyways, I'll deactivate ddraw and see if that works. Thank you very much for the fast reply.

Actually, you can perfectly go through the menus with the arrow keys and abort the mission and quit the game that way...

In fact, I can't. For what I could piece together, it's not like the mouse's really "blocked", but rather, the menu seems to cause an amount of lag so massive it's impossible to effectively scroll or use the arrows. Once, I managed to bring the menu with the arrow exactly over the "save" option and even click on it. But when it came to name the save file, it wouldn't respond.

Anyways, I won't bother you anymore with this. I deactivated ddraw and now works fine. I can live without hi-res for a 1995 game. All I wanted was to play it properly, and that's what I'm doing right now. Thanks a lot for your time :)

Ehh, you seem to misunderstand something here. The high resolution itself is 100% built into the GAME, and doesn't need CnC-DDraw at all.

CnC-DDraw only gives the game windowed mode, can stretch the game's videos to fullscreen in high-res, and allows creative stretching of the game's resolution for aspect ratio correction.

Ok, I get it, thanks for the heads up.
Sorry if I sound a bit too dumb at times. I don't know how it works, I just know it works now.

well, if you start CCConfig, and disable the CnC-DDraw checkbox, only the advanced options at the bottom will go away. The original resolution controls at the top will remain ;)

Well yeah, but that's quite unrelated to the fact the installer made an -incorrect- shortcut. That's been fixed months ago, though.
