I think you were referring to the Bedouins with the nomad Arabs. Berbers on the other hand have inhabited Northern Africa long before the Arab conquest, and before either Phoenicians or Romans appeared there.
the arab conquest would explain why many of them speak arabic. interesting.
and i think i did confuse bedouins and berbers.
in addition, they have been speaking arabic for so long and living with arabs, that many of them now consider themselves arabs.
