I'm a 30-something web developer/programmer, who loves gaming, and loves saving cash. I think that last part comes from being half-Scots... ;) I mainly play on Wii (I love Wiimote/nunchuk controls for FPS games, it's worth the sacrifice in graphics) or on PC. I'll play games on Linux preferably, as it's the OS I use day-to-day, though I still dual-boot to play Windows-only games. Also, I can't work out how to put newlines into my bio. I like white space. You'll find me inhabiting the Bundeals group on Desura, come and join us there!

So Humble Bundle is ignoring Desura again...

Questions were asked about this at the Reddit Ask-Me-Anything, but they were also unfortunately ignored by both the game developers, and by the Humble Bundle organisers.

Scott from Desura, however, did kindly provide some answers, the main points being:

Quote:If the game developers want Desura keys for Humble we will gladly provide them, as it is an honor to be involved. We don't push this as it is up to the developers to decide and most times Humble is a secret exclusive reveal (i.e. first time the game is on linux), so I understand why we miss out.

Quote:If Humble wants Desura keys we will provide them in an instant, [...] we ask for no compensation and provide keys for free.

Stephan Sokolow posted a short blog with some advice on what we can do about it.

ssokolow wrote:My advice for other Desura users is to follow the links to each publisher's website and send some variation on this message via their contact formsĀ (condensed for easy copy-paste to DoubleFine's Twitter):

Withholding last 10% of my intended HiB5 payment until I get Desura keys. I don't use Steam and won't always use Ubuntu Linux.

If they do give you a Desura key, use the " increase your order amount" link on your Humble Bundle page and use the sliders to direct the new payment specifically to the developer who deserves it.

(It's probably also a good idea to mention if, even with the 10% reduction, you still beat all the averages. I forgot to tell them that and I worry they might jump to the wrong conclusion about how much I paid.)

This advice is worth posting elsewhere - here on Desura, and on other sites.

*** Note: it's been pointed out elsewhere that some aren't getting the tongue-in-cheek nature of these messages. Don't know if that is a colloquial thing... But anyway - please send a message to the developers. Be as nice, and polite, and courteous as you can be. Offer to pay more, if that is what you want to do. Be witty, if that suits your writing style. Just send a message - thank you :) ***

Here's my variations:

@BundealsGroup wrote:@TimOfLegend Hi Tim, I'm withholding last 50% of my HiB payment until Desura keys are provided. Am a Linux user who doesn't use Ubuntu. Thx

I wrote:Hi,

Just a quick message to let you know that I am withholding 50% of my Humble Bundle payment to you, until Desura keys are provided in the bundle.

I don't usually resort to actions bordering on blackmail, but as a Linux user who doesn't use Ubuntu, I've been feeling a little slighted by the recent Humble Bundles and their lack of Desura support - as I can no longer have my games installed & updated easily via a game library.

Please consider adding Bastion to Desura, and supplying a Desura key. I am willing to pay double for the convenience. Desura have stated that they will provide keys to you free-of-charge.

I have already paid above average for the bundle - and I will double the amount given to you if & when you provide Desura support. I will also sing your praises to the high heavens (i.e. I'll say a lot of nice things about you on forums and twitter).

Thank you kindly for your time,

To save time, I've assembled the contact details for the developers involved in Humble Indie Bundle 5. Here they are:

Note: Amnesia is already on Desura, but no keys were given out with HiB 5

Capybara Games (Superbrothers: Swords and Sworcery EP)

If anybody has any alternative ideas for what could be done to get Desura keys included again in the Humble Bundle, I'd love to hear them.

* edit - Engival on Reddit suggested changing your name within the personal bundle page from 'Anonymous' (or whatever) to 'Where's Desura?'. Not sure if they keep tabs on these names outside of the top contributors list, but worth a shot.
