Desura Linux is finally available to a closed group of beta testers.
Posted by Platima on Sep 14th, 2011
After months of grueling work, we're proud to announce the launch of Desura Linux beta! The initial testing group is quite small but will grow as we eliminate bugs and are happy with the applications stability. To be fair we will be inviting people in order, so those who requested access to the beta 6 months ago (thanks for your patience!), you will be first in. Once our testers are happy, we will be opening the beta to everyone. Of course it is never too late to apply for the beta, to do so simply join the Desura group here.
Also please note that while you can browse and buy games on Linux, you wont be able to download and play them until you have access to the beta. So PLEASE bear that in mind!
Thanks again to everyone for all the positive (and negative) feedback so far - we welcome the challenge and know the real work is only just beginning. Special thanks to Tim Jung for testing and uploading Linux games like a machine, and to Marshall Greenblatt and the other CEF contributors for the great work. We've got plenty more games coming, some never before on Linux, so much to look forward to.
Finally this is a beta, so we appreciate your understanding that there will be bugs and issues to resolve and we will endevour to address them as soon as we can.
New Information:
- 22nd Sept 2011: A new build is out with MANY fixes. If you couldn't get past login, or don't want to wait, just run "./desura -f" to force your client to update to it (without the quotes of course, and from the desura directory, not from desura/bin/)
- 22nd Sept 2011: Starting the next round of invites as well
Known Issue Notices:
These are issues we are aware of and currently working to address (last updated 22nd Sept 2011):
- On some systems there will be a lot of console output about GDK_IS_WINDOW assertion
- Sometimes exiting the client will result in a crash
When we release an update, you'll be notified above
Bugs and Issues:
Please report any bugs or issues on the forums.
Most bugs and help information is now being posted here .

This looks awesome! The beta client installs and seems to run fine on my 64 bit install, can't wait for the release (or a beta key)!
Good day all, just applied for the Desura Group; i hope i get an invitation as soon as posible :)
Any chance of sending invites soon? Can't wait to try it. ^_^
Another problem. Not all systems have system tray. If you start Desura without one it works until you try to close it. Then the window disappears and it remains running in the background with no way to reach it.
I suggest to shut down the process completely if the main window is closed and system tray icon creation failed.
I'm still waiting to be accepted into the group, i actually need this to download the humble bundles i redeemed because i lost my download links
You realise you can get them back Humblebundle.com
When registering an account from the client, it allows to activate/install games without joining the beta program. So I played with the client a little while until I decided to restart it.
I activated the games from HIB 2/3 and In short: it was the smoothest linux gaming experience ever. Good job!
P.S. May I have an invite? :)
P.P.S. Are you going to support Mac?
Oops, replied to the wrong comment. This comment box has usability issues :)
I am currently working on a Tower Defense based Strategy game. When it is finished, I will publish it on Desura.
If you wanna take a look at it: Metallic-entertainment.com
Signed up to be notified by email when the beta starts and never got it. Now joined the group late so hope it does not take long to get in.
Really excited for this.
up true.
I only waiting on acces to beta ....
I have been waiting for a linux game download manager for almost a decade. I'm so happy you guys have thrown down the gauntlet. I will definitely be buying lots of linux games when I can get this installed on my machine.
If only I could help you code this or support you some other way in this endeavour.
Joining the Beta, buying games, being active on the forums and spreading the word will certainly help them I'm sure :D
Waiting to get accepted. I'm psyched about this. Games on Linux has always been a bit of a tedious affair when mixing open and closed source games (download/cd-install for commercial games, package managers for open ones, tar.bz's for others that are not in the repos etc.).
Desura for Linux will be an epic win for Desura and the community alike. Game on.
When's the next round of invites? :p
Have been waiting for more than a week.
Also, I'm curious if an e-mail notification will be sent on invitation.
Suddenly:
include/SharedObjectLoader.h:75 - Error loading library libuicore.so: 'libuicore.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory'.
Not sure what's changed since last night, it used to work fine. I installed libpng12, libjpeg6 but the result is the same (are they even required anymore?). Also, ./desura -f doesn't change anything.
Apparently it was my fault. I changed ~/desura to ~/Desura. I think the path became hardcoded to ~/desura with some update, as it used to work with ~/Desura.
Man, I can't wait till I can get in, any idea how long the wait list is?
Gaah... gotta get me beta access. BTW, I found a bug already - it's "GNU/Linux". :P
Well unless you can run Desura on Android this guy is right. Because Android is Linux but not GNU.
I don't like going through that stuff, im too lazy for process at the moment
Ok i was tried login desura on my Gentoo-System.
Now I knew, i've to wait for the next wave of invitations. But when I start desura and try to sign in there is no message :-( it only hangs around and do nothing. So I suggest to place there an error message.
Greetings,
butzel
For anyone that is interested (not that I can log in yet as I only just joined the group), I was curious to try Desura on PCBSD on the Linux compatibility layer. Seems to work okay so far.
I know this won't be supported or anything by the Desura guys but I just thought for anyone interested or using BSD I thought I'd mention it. I have screenies but cant post a URL yet of course.
Thank you very much Desura for including me into the beta!
On my debian squeeze desura crash if i click play in M.A.R.S
I'd like to add a note. When installing game and hidding the progress bars, after completion the game still is marked as "Not Ready"
Thanks for the invitation.
Just started the program and installed Neverball. The only warning received was this:
[1010/093814:WARNING:plugin_lib_posix.cc(113)] /usr/lib/browser-plugins/libnptcl3.1.so is nspluginwrapper wrapping a plugin for a different architecture; it will work better if you instead use a native plugin.
I have both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of the plugin so i don`t understand why the program is using the 32 bit library instead of the 64 bit library.
Lgdb.org Linux games database can be used a way to get more free and shareware games to the users thru desura client.
Why didn't you tell me? I signed up for the newsletter to be notified about the Linux client! Now I feel like I wasted a whole lot of time, not having the Desura Linux client!!
