Mount and Blade is a 3D, open-ended, single-player, third- or first-person, computer role-playing game, created and distributed by the Turkish development house TaleWorlds. Mount and Blade has a medieval setting, without any fantasy elements. Mount and Blade is notable for its emphasis on realistic cavalry combat, which was common in the era, but is largely absent in most RPG titles.

The award winning indie game Mount&Blade is to receive an expansion pack bringing a much sought after multiplayer mode. Read on for an information round up and some exclusive information to ModDB

Posted by DainIronfoot on Mar 3rd, 2009

Firstly, thankyou to the ModDB staff for the editors choice award, and thankyou for all those who voted for M&B. Armagan, the creators of M&B gives his thanks!

Since the very early versions of Mount&Blade, back in the mists of time one feature has always been frequently requested by players: Multiplayer. Though the original M&B focused on a single player sandbox experience a new expansion pack to be released by developers Taleworlds will bring the experience of medieval combat to the internet. Here then is a summary of everything currently planned for the expansion pack including some exclusive new info for ModDB:

  • The multiplayer will be battles only, not the campaign. It will bring all the most brilliant features of M&B singleplayer battles such as sieges, mounted combat, large battles and skill based melee combat to the multiplayer realm.
  • The current playerlimit is 32 players in a server. This number can be boosted by NPC troops (bots) which can be commanded by players or operate on their own for a co-op experience.
  • There will be several gametypes such as team deathmatch and siege battles.
  • Players will be able to host their own servers as well as play on official servers
  • There will almost certainly be some form of beta program
  • The game will strive to have the best melee combat in a multiplayer game ever.
  • As well as multiplayer the expansion will bring several other new features and improve others such as
  • Improved strategic AI
  • Extended diplomatic options
  • State-of the-Art rendering technologies introduced for the first time, including the addition of High Dynamic Range (HDR)
  • A brand new faction to fight for!
  • The game will still be incredibly moddable. In fact so far, only one file of the module system is incompatible with 1.011 mods.

And now some exclusive new info for modDB on some new features:

  1. Formations: you'll be able to form lines deeper than two.
  2. Morale will affect battles more and your soldiers and enemies will run away when broken.
  3. It'll be more difficult to keep soldiers from an enemy faction. For example, if you are a Vaegir and you keep raiding Swadian villages, swadian troops in your party will be more likely to desert and your party morale will be reduced.

For more info, see the official Taleworlds forums!

lol don't let that stop you, I personally think the mp won't be all that good in comparison to SP, get some mods for SP and you're having 800man foot battles with romans vs goths and an assortment of other factions in no time.

For example, look at this video, it may be a bit chuggy but lets see any other game have 800 independent AI running around fighting at the same time (the total war games dont have independent individual AI, so they don't count)

Buy the game, don't wait it out for mp :P

Nah, there is mod support for multiplayer too. Also, M&B:W combat is very very good. One of the best skill based melee combat in video games history.

I once said, 2 years ago, that if Mount & Blade had multiplayer and updated graphics, it "would be a masterpiece the likes of which had not yet been seen".

Years later, I rejoice with the news that those exact same enhancements are being worked on! Hurray for indie gaming, and hurray for developers who listen to their playerbase!!!

Can't wait for the expansion, Hopefully it's not the same price as the original game, but I'll sure as hell be picking this up either way. MnB is really amazing in my eyes.

Also, congrats on the win this year, you really deserve it.

What is wrong with the pricing of the game, it's perfectly fine.
Games like half life 2 sold at stupid prices for just a few hours of fun, this game is one that you can keep playing and playing and playing and playing...then if you do get bored, you can get the awesome mods, and keep playing some more!

I wasn't much complaining since I had said I'll be picking it up either way, I got the first one and loved it, no need to flip out over a small comment when I said I was picking it up anyways when it's out.

Very cool news, but I wonder what they mean by expansion. Will it be an update to the original M&B? It's good it looks like they're keeping it compatible with mods, though, whatever form it'll take.

Looks like you've thought of some good Ideas but I agree, their needs to be a cooperative Campaign mode for Mount and Blade, A Coop Campaign mode would hugely increase the games funness level IMHO.

I'd recommend this game a ton with Cooperative modes being a priority.
