Metagolf is a mini-golf game with multiple challenges. Up to 4 players can compete on the same screen, sharing the same golf ball and the same goals. Team up for loads of fun with friends or play alone to improve the accuracy of your swing across 3 different platforms (Windows, Mac Os X and Linux). More focused on action and real time strategies than a traditional mini-golf, discover full interactive environments from fish ponds to breakable chains and deadly traps. Thanks to his built-in level editor, you can create, share and download new courses. Currently available in two languages, English and French, Metagolf let you reuse any provided content or make new one from various media to create your very own world. Change the realistic physical system behaviour or combine any game mode with exiting different type of golf ball. The choice of setting your own game play preferences is entirely yours !

Itís too bad BlitzMax is broken. Iím not very familiar with Desura but Iím not seeing any system requirements on this page; it would be nice if it was noted somewhere (before buying) that the game requires PulseAudio. Or better, you could use SDL_mixer to process the sound of your game ;). (OpenAL and portaudio should work too.)

(Now to be objective, maybe itís not worth your time to fix this issue specifically for this game, since according to the Steam survey at least 58% Linux users use Ubuntu, which uses PA by default.)

System requirements is nowhere to be seen on Desura.
I've put it in the Forum but of course I know it's not the best place for that.
The hideous justified aligned text block you see in the summary is very limited in characters and does not support rich text / links or HTML.

Know that I'm working right now on a solution for this. I can't guarantee anything and this is why :

BlitzMax doesn't support any libraries out of the box and is kinda discontinued since years now. The Linux version of this programming language didn't received much love from his author, and we all face this problem. Every patch and fix that we provided to this problem failed on the long term.

Metagolf was created under Windows and work great under Mac Os too. I did my best to support Linux but I'm only able to install the Mint Distro (because my configuration is not fully supported anywhere else). I also know it works great under Ubuntu since PulseAudio is in by default.

Wrapping a whole audio driver is a HUGE amount of work, prone to fail because each Linux users are different and each systems evolve and change his behavior every now and then (well at least each time I give it a try).

The Blitz community already try to support PulseAudio, Open Sound System, OpenAL, ALSA and some others but ultimately only PulseAudio gives us the best results. And when you choose one of them, it's inevitable that some users want you to use the other :-). The subject suddenly reemerge these days around others BlitzMax Developers so there is certainly something new about it.

Know that I work alone on this project with my own funds. I only sold less than 200 copies of the game in 2 or 3 years. The game stay in Alpha-funding for a long time so I could listen to suggestions and fix as many bugs I could. Unfortunately I didn't received enough Linux feedback to this problem and all in all I need a bit of time to find a practical solution.

I worked countless hours on this game, so every fix worth it ;-)

Thatís why Iím suggesting SDL_mixer. Instead of having to support every system yourself, SDL already does it very well.

Good luck with your sales, maybe a demo would helpÖ I also have a game for sale that sold 3 copies in a year :) (not on Desura). You could try putting the game on and/or the Humble Store. is simple and has a feature to automatically give the game to a few game journalists so it could lead to a couple reviews.

Thanks for the tips :)

I just sent a patch for validation to Desura to provide an experimental ALSA support for Linux :D

I didn't really made Metagolf for the money (or then I wouldn't do video games at all :D ). For a first game, it's more a challenge I set to myself in order to stay motivated and provide the best quality possible with the limited means at my disposal. I think the price is fair, the only problem real indies (or better : homebrew makers) are facing is a lack of coverage or a market saturation.

Do you have any website where I could have a look at your game ?

Hi Armitage, my game is currently only for sale on the Ubuntu Software Center, which was not a good choice at all (but didnít exist at the time and I didnít know the USC experience would suck so much). My site is (it probably looks a bit weirdÖ Iím not a web designer and I made it 10 years ago).

Nice board game you got there !
I like the atmosphere and the music fit nicely.
I often think about board games ideas and concepts. Wish I could develop them one day.
Do you think you will continue the game development adventure after Smart Lines ?
