Enola is a horror/adventure game about love, hate, and death. You play as a young girl on a mysterious place, looking for her missing girlfriend. However, as you explore this world, you find there is something dark and evil lurking in the shadows. You’ll have to be quick and cunning to survive. Do you have what it takes to save your loved one before it's too late?

RSS Feed Enola character profiles: Building Angelica

This may be good or bad, but to me story comes first, simply because I am not half as good at “designing” games as I am at writing. A while ago I’ve been saying how Enola is all about the story, and how that makes it a “different” kind of horror game, and Angelica kinda proves the point.

This may be good or bad, but to me story comes first, simply because I am not half as good at “designing” games as I am at writing. A while ago I’ve been saying how Enola is all about the story, and how that makes it a “different” kind of horror game, and Angelica kinda proves the point.
I (sorta) introduced Angelica on Facebook a while ago. Angelica is one of the most important characters in Enola. When coming up with the character, the main idea was “she’s a young girl with the face of an angel” (thus the name, heh). Storywise, Since she’s very important, I wrote her entire biography, so I have a 40-ish page document with her biography and reference pictures.
Pictures serve as a “visual connection” when it comes to writing the character. That means I had to figure out how she looks like (after all the “face of an angel” description doesn’t quite say much). I’ve learned a good trick is, if you were to make whatever you’re writing into a movie, think who could play that part (be it an actor, singer, or simply someone you know). I had some basic idea of what I wanted (blond hair, white skin, green-ish eyes), and after thinking about this for some time, I thought of Elle Fanning.

You’re more than welcome to disagree, bot to me Elle has the “strong personality” I pictured for Angelica, based on the performances I’ve seen from her. She is also very cute and has an almost-angelic face. If I ever made a movie about the Enola universe, or if I used live-action footage for the game (à la Myst, The 7th Guest, or any old adventure game), and had enough money, I’d do everything I can so that she played Angelica.
Angelica does show up in the game (more than once), and it would make little sense to figure out how she’d look like if I was not going to use that “likeness” in the game. I pretty much had to study Elle’s facial anatomy and figure out how the geometry lines would flow (in other words I felt like some crazy dude because I had to spend so much time staring at someone’s pictures… next step is to hang a bunch of dolls upside down… ok… anyway…)
As I said, Angelica is a little bit older than Elle, so I need to make the obvious adjustments, but after spending way too much time in Maya, I think Angelica is looking Elle-ish enough:

Belive it or not, dat nose and jaw line were very tricky…
So, soon you will finally see Angelica in Enola, and not so soon you will see her animated and speaking
That means I will also need to get an “Elle Fanning’s expression chart” that hopefully will show more facial expressions that Kristen Stewart’s expression chart.
That’s all for today people, stick around to see more updates on Enola. If you want to support the development of Enola, the alpha is being sold in a few stores (including Desura).
You can also vote for Enola on Steam Greenlight, for we need them votes Smile
