So I seem to have a problem. The game won't start. I was able to start the launcher which patched to the latest version and restarted. Then there was that button saying "Lainch Application" which did nothing if clicked.
So I uninstalled EoS and reinstalled it. Launcher was once more patched to the latest version, but that button still does nothing if clicked. The same goes for the "Repair Download" button.
Maybe theres a problem with ports? Since I am only able to use 80 and 443.
Specs:
4GB Ram
i3-3120 @2.5
Intel HD 4000+GeforceGT 635M
Windows 8 Laptop
DX11
Game Installed in "C:\Games\Edge of Space"
Hope you can help me.

The game no longer functions outside of Steam. You will need to log into your Arkdrop.com account, and redeem the key next to "download." That will bring you up to the new version of the game, and should take care of this issue.

Woah, you're kidding right? So people who bought it here have to use Steam now? If true, that's totally unacceptable.

Ah, I see you're no stranger to controversy:

Reddit.com

Well I won't be buying the game until the DRM-free version promised in the Kickstarter is available.

We do not use steams integrated DRM, we only use steam as a distributer, because we are a small team and need the ability to distribute the game easily. As for the version promised in kickstarter, that was something we promised to our kickstarters after release.

I'm sorry that's how you feel but we did the things we did to accomplish our goals, and create a good game :)

Just to make sure I understand correctly, you mean once the game is installed you can play without Steam even running and you can move the game's folder out of Steam's folder, then uninstall Steam and still play the game?

That's less bad than I thought but still bad. Requiring Steam to install the game is still DRM, it's just activation per-install instead of per-play. Not only that, but people who bought the game here are now forced to use Steam. This is pretty unfair for those who don't like Steam and didn't buy the game there.

Fair enough about the Kickstarter thing, it is true that only backers who picked that reward are entitled to a DRM-free version but it's pretty weird not to make the DRM-free version available to others since you have to make one for the backers.

Thanks for the reply, but it's still killed the interest I had for this game. I'm not interested in buying any more games that require Steam and on top of that I think forcing Steam on people AFTER they've bought the game is pretty scummy.

I'm sorry, to be more clear, there is a difference between using steam as DRM, and as a distributer, both require you to run the game with steam however, but the added DRM does encryption to prevent piracy, we dont do that.

I understand that you feel this is 'unfair' but without making this change it would have DRASTICALLY slowed down the progress of the project and we felt it would have been less fair to to take months longer to develop each patch.

That's not true. There are some games on Steam that, once installed can be played without Steam running (or even installed). I can understand how those could be argued to be DRM-free, but if EoS needs Steam running for you to play then that is in no way DRM-free and I'm fairly shocked that you'd try and claim otherwise.

If you choose to put DRM on your game then that's fair enough, but at least be honest about it.

It doesn't change the fact that you've moved the goalposts. Steam as an option is all well and good, but to suddenly require all the people who bought it on Desura to use Steam is just not ok, especially when it's not even DRM-free on Steam.

If you were just using Steam as a distributor and it was only needed to get the updates and not to play I could sort of understand.

I understand your frustrations, but there is a difference, the main reason we use steam solely now is two fold, one so we have a single point of contact for patching, and two, so that we have unique IDs for users, unique IDs are created by steam and are used to stamp users for a few different things, one being product keys for special edition items as well as kickstarter rewards and a few other things, and two to give an ID for the saving of server side vaulted characters this also leads down the road of simplifications in how server hosting and joining of servers will work as well as our plans for workshop features integrated into steam. I understand that some people just hate steam and don't want to use it, but it quickly became a must for us to meet our goals seeing as there is only one actual engineer working on the project.

We use as much as or as little of steam as we need to, to meet our goals
