RSS Feed Developer Banter: Black Mesa Source

Anthony Stone, Jean Paul Jarreau, Ben Truman and Mike Hillard talk about the anticipated Black Mesa Source.

Article Posted by Henley on Dec 26th, 2008

Developer Banter, the only show you need for an insight into mods and indie game development. This time in the hot seat is the Black Mesa Source team. Black Mesa Source aims to re-make the award winning Half-Life game that won countless game of the year awards when it was first released 10 years ago. This mod wont be just a copy paste job like Half-Life: Source. Think high quality models, amazing scripted sequences and enough nostalgia moments to satisfy any Half-Life geek.

Oh really? Pity, but what they have to do what they have to do in order to release a COMPLETE, mostly bug-free mod. I would be ****** otherwise.. :D

Sound quality will differ from person to person, in this case 3 of the 6 people in the interview had high quality mics, the rest where either built in or cheap mics. There is really not a lot I can do with that.

That'd be the Orange Box SDK which is available with a purchase of a Steam game.

Enjoyed the banter, looking forward to the mod guys.

You'll need the Source SDK Base - Orangebox installed too which is under the tools tab of the Steam UI.

I really like these new banters. I listened to the entire thing and it was really enjoyable. Interesting to hear some backround info about the BM mod, thoughts about the project from the devs themselves and of course more info about the developers.

Thanks Moddb staff and BM team!

So uh... They said they were using the latest updates of the source engine for Black Mesa, like the ones used in Half-Life 2 Episode 2... But they never mentioned using the latest updates of the source engine used in Left 4 Dead...? :P

L4D's SDK isn't even out yet. If they were to update their mod for L4D's engine, then by the time they finish that there may be a new engine out already.

PwettyPony Dec 28 2008, 1:26pm replied:

Changing to orange box engine already cost a lot of time, if they change to the L4D engine, then forget 2009 as release.

+2 votes     reply to
Juniez Jan 2 2009, 2:14pm replied:

The L4D engine switch wouldn't work because the L4D engine has no real improvement apart from shadows and mass AI, which isn't really going to be useful in BMS, along with what everyone else said.

mp5's rate of fire is really slow, its slower than the real gun, and even slower than any assault rifle(which shoot bigger bullets, so loading bigger bullets take longer time, so they shoot slower, but SMG shoot smaller bullets, loading smaller bullets takes less time because of it, they shoot faster) Even if you don't care about making it realistic, please make it shoot a little bit faster, because it really sucks. Glock shoots faster. why should i use mp5, when glock is faster(and it is even faster than the original hl1)

Betelgeuze Dec 27 2008, 5:10pm replied:

I think thats in slow motion... and still I don't really care how realistic those guns are, its fiction anyway.

+4 votes     reply to
Mc_Intire Dec 28 2008, 5:51am replied:

How would you know that, did you already play the game? To me it looks like the gun got a slightly slower ROF but some more accuracy than the HL1 MP5, which is fine by me. The HL1 weapon couldn't be used in autofire at all anyways, unless the enemy was a huge fatso or already sitting in your face. So I totally wouldn't mind such a change.

Edit: lol, the last three replies didn't show for me. Anyways, maybe it's also what Betelgeuze said.

Playing Counter-strike doesn't make you an expert on how guns work.

PwettyPony Dec 28 2008, 1:33pm replied:

Wow, seriously.
Your statement alone makes me laff tears, tolgakanatli.

They've said it a lot of times, the Machine gun, doesnt have to do with the real gun at all, it'll stay totaly in the same line as HL1.

Since most magazines have a clipsize of 30. Not 50.
Also the Mp5 model is solely visual. You can change between the MP5 and M16 skin via a console command.
Suggesting that the weapon aint a MP5 and aint a M16 either.
